During my childhood years, summer wasn’t complete without a trip to the beach with my parents, two younger brothers, and other relatives. Since the beaches were just 15 minutes from our house, there was no excuse for us not to go. At the beach, my greatest fascination was the blurry bluish-purple shapes looming at the horizon. I often wondered if those were actually Basilan or Sulu or even Indonesia! When I asked my parents about it, however, they told me that those were the Sta. Cruz Islands, islands that were popular for its rare pink sand. Being a child, the idea of pink sand was infinitely exciting and quite unimaginable for me since all the beaches near the city proper had black or gray sand.

Most girls celebrate their debut at 18, but not the British soul singer Adele Adkins. At age 19, Adele started recording her debut album, also entitled 19, and two years later she has taken the world by storm with her astounding vocals and brand of pop-meets-soul. Touted by the British press as the new Amy Winehouse, it’s surprising to think that she is just 21 and has already won two Grammy Awards, one for Best New Artist and one for Best Female Pop Vocal Performance for her single “Chasing Pavements.”

In celebration of the Hermosa Festival 2009, City Councilor Gerky Valesco opened his 2nd Solo Art Exhibit titled "Algunas Veces" last October 5, 2009 at the Ateneo de Zamboanga University Gallery of the Peninsula and the Archipelago. "'Algunas Veces' means sometimes in Spanish and Chavacano, the artist having an occasional time to showcase paintings after he won a seat in the City Council in 2007 which has made him one of the busiest councilors in the city. Last year, he was named as the neophyte councilor who filed the most number of ordinances and resolutions among which are for the promotion of local arts and artists." (ADZU Website)
