| Zamboanga City — The Department of Health (DOH) warned the public against heat stroke and summer diseases as high temperatures continue to scorch the entire country.
Health Secretary Esperanza Cabral said that hotter days are ahead according to the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (Pagasa) as the summer season officially starts and the El Niño phenomenon brings an earlier dry spell to the country. Cabral said that with hotter temperatures predicted this season, the public must be cautious of heat stroke to avoid dehydration.
She said heat stroke cases increase in hot and humid weather particularly with people staying outdoors and during vigorous exercise in hot weather. Pagasa on Tuesday recorded the hottest day of the year so far in Metro Manila with temperatures rise through a scorching 36 degrees Celsius. The weather bureau said the heat wave is expected to continue.

Zamboanga City — President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo instructed her Cabinet to come up with quick and cheap solutions to end Mindanao’s power problems.
Largely supplied by hydroelectric power plants, the country’s bread basket has been experiencing rotating power outages as a result of the El Nino phenomenon, which will likely delay the onset of the rainy season until late June.
In a media briefing after the joint Cabinet-National Economic and Development Authority (NEDA) meeting in Malacanang, Executive Secretary Leandro Mendoza said Energy Secretary Angelo Reyes presented five options on how to address the problem.

The Bureau of Internal Revenue – Zamboanga City added another feather on its cap as it made it to the “billionaires’ club” for the fourth straight year.
Revenue District Officer Roberto Bucoy, in an interview, said that the city has overshot its target from 2006 to 2009, subsequently breaching the P1 billion marks over the said periods. Last year’s collection reached a total of P1,303,156,302.68 as compared to the P1,259,966,408.98 in 2008.
It is important to note that the said periods where the bureau posted record highs in the city’s collection history, were the very critical period when the world economic crisis hit big time, causing the collapse of so called “world super economies”.
RDO Bucoy stressed that the very reason for his office’s success is the direct result of constant monitoring of the compliance of tax payers and a diplomatic approach to tax payers in the city.
“Our success is clearly a result of constant monitoring of the compliance of the tax payers which resulted in the surge of tax collection, especially the EVAT, withholding tax, the percentage tax, excise tax and other taxes”, Bucoy pointed out.
